The Merdeka Campus is part of the Independent Learning policy by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia which provides opportunities for students to hone their skills according to their talents and interests by going directly into the world of work in preparation for future careers.

Based on Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 3 of 2020 concerning National Higher Education Standards establishing the Independent Campus Learning Policy (MBKM) and referring to the Brawijaya University standards for Independent Learning, students are given the choice to determine their learning process strategy according to their character and learning strategy.

There are six educational path options, namely :
1. Regular Education
2. Independent Education Study 1 semester at Brawijaya University
3. Independent Education Study 1 semester outside Brawijaya University
4. Independent Education Study for 2 semesters inside and outside Brawijaya University
5. Independent Education Study 2 semesters outside Brawijaya University
6. Independent Education Study for 3 semesters inside and outside Brawijaya University

Eight forms of independent learning activities include:
1. Internship / Work Practice
2. Teaching Assistantship in the Education Unit
3. Research
4. Humanity Projects
5. Entrepreneurial Activities
6. Independent Study/Project
7. Build a Village
8. Student Exchange
