History
The Department of Electrical Engineering, Brawijaya University was founded in October 1978. The establishment of the Department of Electrical Engineering was the vision of Prof. Ir. Suryono (Alm), who at that time served as Brantas Project Leader, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Brawijaya University, and Prof. Ir. Sutami (Alm), as Minister of Public Works and Electrical Power (PUTL). Both of them saw a huge opportunity for the development of the electricity sector. At its inception, the existence of the Department of Electrical Engineering could not be separated from the PIP (Principal Scientific Pattern) of Brawijaya University and other supporting conditions at that time, for example:
- the need for Electrical Engineering graduates continues to increase,
- there is support from various parties, for example from the Kali Brantas Multi-Purpose Main Project, the State Electricity Public Company, and others,
- the government’s commitment to providing electrical energy evenly to remote rural areas throughout Indonesia, and
- empowering rural communities towards industrialization.
In 1984-1996, together with other state universities, such as: ITB, UI, UGM, and ITS, the Electrical Engineering Department of Brawijaya University received the trust of the Government to carry out the Engineer Acceleration Project (P2I) for the Undergraduate (S1) program. . With this P2I, the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya was able to build a laboratory building, covering an area of ±2,000m2 and a lecture building covering an area of ±2,000m2 which is shared with the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
In 1991, the Department of Electrical Engineering was selected as one of the institutions that received a large amount of laboratory equipment from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH, known as the N55-Project. With this assistance, the laboratory equipment facilities owned by the Department of Electrical Engineering are increasingly complete. To accommodate the new equipment, in 1993 a laboratory building covering an area of ±2,000m2 was built. In 2000, using community assistance funds, the Department of Electrical Engineering had additional new building facilities covering an area of ± 2,000m2 which were used for lecture activities.

The realization of the Master of Electrical Engineering (PMTE) Program at the Brawijaya University Postgraduate Program (PPSUB) has been carried out since the 2004-2005 Academic Year. While waiting for the administrative process to issue the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI, PMTE is temporarily one of the specializations in the Mechanical Engineering Masters Program (PMTM). PMTE began accepting its first batch of new students in the academic year 2004 – 2007 for the specialization: Applied Electrical Engineering. Since the 2007 academic year, PMTE has been held as a separate study program based on Implementation License No. 1575/D/T/2007 dated 29 June 2007. Based on developments in the implementation of educational activities, the Master of Electrical Engineering (PMTE) Program starting in 2008 accepted new students with specializations: Electrical Power Systems (STL), Control and Electronic Systems (SKE), and Communication and Information Systems (SKI). It is hoped that with the three specializations above, Master’s students will focus more on the lecture material, including completing the thesis that will be written.
